The Part III Calendar Year -- 2015-16

The purpose of this page is to give you an idea of what happens during the Part III year. There is a Google Calendar available giving details of several official Part III events (see bottom of page), but it is no replacement for the information below. Entries in italics are not yet updated from last year.

July-August-September

What to do before you come.

  • Prepare for the Part III year.
  • Arrange for Grad Record Exams (GRE's) if you think you might wish to study for a PhD in the US.

Michaelmas Term

  • Week 0
    Tuesday 6 October - Full Term begins
    Wednesday 7 October - Meeting 09:30 at CMS in MR2, Peanuts and wine in CMS at 16:30, group photo.
    Thursday 8 October - Michaelmas Term lectures begin. Catch-up workshops begin (afternoons).
  • Week 1
    Monday 12 October 13:45 - Study Group meeting (MR2).
    Wednesday 14 October 16:15 - Talk: Introduction to the Careers Service (including applying to PhDs in the USA) (MR2).

    Wednesday 21 October 16:15 - Talk: Exams and lectures (MR2).
  • Week 3
    Wednesday 28 October 16:30 - Careers Event for Mathematicians, CMS.
    Sunday 1 November - List of exams announced in the Reporter by this date.
  • Week 4
    Wednesday 4 November 16:15 - Talk: How to prepare a talk (MR9).
  • Week 5
    Monday 9 November - Deadline for faculty to request additional examination papers.
    Wednesday 11 November 16:15 - Talk: Applying for PhDs (general and Cambridge specific advice) (MR2).
    Thursday 12 November - Research in UK Afternoon.

    Wednesday 18 November 16:15 - Talk: How to Write an Essay 1: How to Read a Paper (MR2)

    Monday 23 November - Essay descriptions available via web (approximate date).
  • Week 8
    Wednesday 2 December - Michaelmas Term lectures end.
    Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 2-4 December - Part III Seminar Series.
    Friday 4 December - Party in Part III room.
