Linyi Normal University Shandong Summer School 2009 Project

&q

The Project:  The plan is to take between six and ten student "teachers" from Cambridge to run a mathematics summer school for advanced (final and Masters) students from universities in Shandong Province.

The Aims:

- to give students in Shandong the experience of the student-led seminars which are so much a part of our mathematical life here in Cambridge,

-to stimulate a research culture within Shandong Province,

-to  encourage networking both between UK students and Shandong students, and amongst Shandong students,

-for our Asian students, to explore means of serving their home countries even while they are studying/working abroad,

-for our Western students, to give them an experience of life at Chinese universities.

The Programme:

- When: Ten days in July/August, 2009, tbc.

- What: Students from Cambridge will choose a topic, at Part II or basic Part III level, and will have four two-hour sessions in which to explain the topic to groups of up to twenty Shandong students.

-Programme:

We now have tentative dates:

Main group will depart London for Beijing on 28 or 29 June.

English speaking students will attend language classes  29 June - 7 July.  The Summer school will run 7-13 July, more or less as below, with the addition of a mini conference at the end, when students attending the summer school will present examples, and one day preceding the conference in which Chinese students may prepare their talks for the mini conference.

14 July we will meet with staff from Linyi and possibly elsewhere to talk about the possibilities for developing this programme.

15-22 July free for travel, or living in Shandong experience.

22 or 23 July, or whenever, return to UK.

I suggest you use this site to discuss possibilities for travel after the end of the summer school.

Travel arrangements:

Accommodation : Cambridge students will be put up in the International Centre at Linyi Normal University.

The cost: We are hoping to find funds to cover travel and living expenses.

Language: Cambridge students may teach in either English or Chinese.  We will appoint a student translator for those teaching in English.  However, non Chinese speaking students will find efforts to acquire the language well repaid.

Pre-requisites: Those taking part are expected to be graduate students at Cambridge or have completed Part III and be intending to continue as a PhD student. Experience of giving student seminars is necessary.  Additionally, Cambridge students wishing to serve as teachers on the course will be given extra training on preparing suitable short courses.  There will be three opportunities for this, one at the beginning of the Michaelmas term 2008, one at the beginning of Lent term 2009, and one following the Part III exams.

Further information will be posted on this site as the programme develops.

Planning meeting, Linyi Normal University, 22-28 July. Marj Batchelor, James Griffin and Li Qin had a productive week.

27/7/08 Hello from Linyi University.

We have had a productive two days so far laying the groundwork for the 2009 Shandong Summer School visit. The mathematics department here has responded enthusiastically to the idea, and we are beginning to thrash out a programme. Watch this space for details.

In the meantime, some pictures.

Such educational trips will

Such educational trips will definitely helps the students to broaden there mind and can learn more things beside there coursework. The tradition and culture between western society and China is vast difference. This is a great opportunity for the students who want to learn more about Chinese tradition. Travelling

Hello everyone, I'd like to register an interest in travelling after we're done. Lhasa sounds fantastic, though it is a very long way. With booking our tickets to Beijing in mind, does anyone have a good idea of a return date? James

just a word about tibet - i

just a word about tibet - i don't know how easy it is to get visas to TAR - certainly 4 years (when i was there) ago it required a bit of ingenuity to avoid having to go on an 'official' (=rubbish) tour. also, it would be best to be there for *at least* 8 days if you're planning to go travelling out of lhasa - firstly altitude sickness will almost certainly mean that for the first 2 or 3 days climbing stairs will be difficult, let alone walking. it's definitely worth going though.

I don't seem to be able to update list. Will try again in the morning.

questions about logistics....

What kind of visas will we be going on? Tourist? If so, they don't happen to be limited to say 30 days, so if we want to stay longer, that won't be possible?

James C., touring places like Lhasa, sadly may be hard -- we have to think about getting passes for Tibet...

Hi all, London to Beijing on

Hi all,

London to Beijing on the 28th/29th of June is great for me too. I think I'd like to see some of China after the teaching is all done, so if anyone else would like a travel companion for this, please let me know! Having said that, being a "not previously from Cambridge Part III student" means that I'm pretty poor, so something that wouldn't cost a huge amount is what I'll need!

For flights home, I'm free to travel pretty much whenever.

travelling after teaching

For example, here's something I could fancy... 3-day train journey Beijing--Lhasa everywhere from 30 to 100 quid depending how much comfort you'd care for x-days in and around Lhasa. either train journey back, or rather fly back Lhasa--Beijing for around 250 quid ( I suspect that would be the most substantial cost...) thoughts, people? Irida

Lhasa sounds good

I am planning on staying until the 31st giving ~16 days to travel. It sounds like there are a number of interesting 3/4 day treks around Lhasa which don't need full equipment. Combined with a few days sightseeing in Lhasa and a bit of time around Beijing (plus 6 days of train travel when maybe I can get some math done).

excellent!

I'm up for the treks and sightseeing (btw how did you find out about the organised trips -- online, which ones in particular?).  In that case coming back on the 31st sounds good.  And the train options sounds more attractive when conjoined with possibility of maths happening.

Trekking

My Rough Guide to China gave me some "rough" ideas, but it looks like "Trekking in Tibet: A Traveller's Guide", Gary McCue, 1999, is the book to get hold of for full details. Just found it on google books.
